Vistas is published each spring on the occasion of the Conservancy's Annual Meeting. It presents the Conservancy's Annual Report.
The Conservancy published the Helderberg Escarpment Planning Guide in February 2002. The Helderberg Escarpment is a major focus for the Conservancy; the Guide provides for the first time a comprehensive study of the environment in a 60 square mile area on and near the Escarpment -- a solid foundation for the Conservancy's Strategic Acquisitions Program.
Developed over a ten-year period by an award-winning committee, the 257-page Guide examines the geology, soils, hydrology, flora and fauna, agriculture, aesthetics, recreation, history, present land use and zoning, noise and electromagnetic radiation of this unique area. Planners, municipal officials, developers, residents, and anyone else wishing to better understand the special character of the Helderberg Escarpment region will find the Guide an invaluable resource. Cost, including postage and handling, is $20.
The Front Cover, Back Cover, Table of Contents, and Executive Summary of the Helderberg Escarpment Planning Guide can be viewed using the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
The Conservancy also stocks a limited number of conservation publications; the price includes postage and handling:
- Conservation Options - A Landowner's Guide, a publication of the Land Trust Alliance, explains how to protect your land for future generations; it includes a supplement, Conservation Options in New York State. The 55 page booklet and the seven page supplement are available from the Conservancy for $8
- Your Land is Your Legacy, by J.Cosgrove and J.Freedgood of the American Farmland Trust is a guide to planning for the future of your farm. The goals are to help farmers find the best way to transfer their operations to other farmers, and to keep productive land in agriculture. Cost is $7.50.
- Preserving Family Lands, by tax attorney Stephen Small, is the landowner's introduction to basic tax laws and tax rules, and the variety of approaches that can be taken while protecting land from estate taxes. The message of the book is simple: if you have land you love, you may have an estate tax problem -- the land may have become so valuable it may have to be sold to pay the estate tax. Cost is $15.
