Fox Preserve

The Fox Preserve is a rolling 2-mile walk in the woods along Shaker Creek. The preserve has a picnic area with an amazing view overlooking the Mohawk River. This property is conveniently located across the street from the Mohawk Bike Path. Bike racks at the parking lot make this an easy spot to bike to for an easy walk in the woods

This 70-acre preserve was donated by Dr. Patricia Fox in 2015. The property is one of the last remaining parcels of more than 50 contiguous acres located in the Town of Colonie. Shaker Creek flows along the edge of the property. The creek was named for the Shaker people who settled the area and took over the river valley from Indigenous peoples to grow Shaker corn. Today, the shallow flats of the river have been flooded for transportation, making it unsuitable for agriculture.

Since the property is a combination of field, forest, and stream, there is an abundance of wildlife. Bald eagles have been spotted from the picnic area flying along the river corridor, and the forested trails are a great place to spy summer warblers.
