*The ILF education staff will provide some amphibian focused activities for kids from 2-4 p.m.

Have you ever been driving on a rainy spring night and witnessed what seems like the road has come alive with hopping frogs? Less noticeable are the salamanders moving more slowly across the road. Night-time traffic on rainy nights can result in many individuals not making it to their breeding ponds. Do you notice certain times in the spring and summer where every hiking trail seems to be covered in juvenile Eastern Red-spotted Newts (Red Efts)? It's not just you, these occurrences all relate to the lifecycle of our local amphibians - and they're pretty exciting to witness!

Learn more about our local species, their habitats, and how humans can help them thrive, join MHLC at Indian Ladder Farms as we host local herpetologist and retired DEC wildlife biologist Al Breisch. He'll be discussing the phenomenon of the "Big Night" amphibian migration in early spring and how to safely participate in monitoring. Al will also give us a crash course on the incredible diversity of our 21 native amphibians that call the Helderbergs their home and the habitats in which they reside and reproduce. We will also explore techniques for identifying species and will discuss potential ways volunteers can get involved in completing surveys to help determine the prevalence of certain species in our area.

* The Tasting Room will be open for the duration of the event, but the Farm Store will be closed. Be sure to grab a can of ILF's Salamander Crossing, a New Zealand Pilsner.
