Amphibian Migration & Road Crossing Project
Volunteer Opportunity - open to all

Date: TBD (early/mid March)
Time: after sunset (~ 7 - 10 p.m.)
Location: TBA (Altamont/Voorheesville area)

Join MHLC on a special volunteer assignment as we help amphibians cross the road! This important event helps to save these amazing creatures and provides important data to NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

We will be meeting in the Altamont/Voorheesville area. The exact location will be shared after registration.

The date will remain posted on the website as "TBD" as we monitor weather conditions. For  amphibians to migrate, it needs to be at 40 degrees at night with rain or humid conditions. Registered participants will receive an email when a date has been selected - anticipate that there will be relatively short notice.

‍MHLC Land Steward Kim Neaton will be leading our group. Kim will be on site for three hours, but volunteers do not have to commit to staying this long. Please review the responsiblities listed below, then use the form at the bottom of this page to sign up. If you have any questions, please contact Kim at 518-436-6346 ext. 3006 or email kim@mohawkhudson.org.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  1. Volunteers should be generally available in the evenings over the next few weeks as there will be relatively short notice of the event date. (We do understand that not everyone who signs up will be able to make the chosen date.)
  2. Volunteers should be familiar with identifying common/popular amphibian species. You will receive an email with materials to review in advance.
  3. Volunteers should be comfortable assisting amphibians in crossing the road.
  4. Volunteers will record numbers, this data will be shared with DEC.
  5. Volunteers will need to bring: headlamp and/or flashlight, rain gear, hat with brim recommended, and dress warm! MHLC will provide reflective vests, pencils and data sheets, and small buckets for transporting
  6. Sign up below to join us! Your email will be added to the "Big Night" participant mailing list.

As part of our registration process, we require that all event participants agree to our Event Release and Waiver of Liability. A photography release is included in this waiver.
